  1. Sketch-a-Day #50

    February 28, 2011 by Collin

Here it is, the big 50. Well, compared to the entire year it’s not all that big. I should probably say to commemorate this milestone I decided to do something different, but the reality is that I was lucky to have this to fall back on. Heather and I were out during the day on Saturday (when this was drawn) and we were having lunch at Fargos before heading off to Derek’s house to record some podcasts.

While waiting for time to pass I had an idea for the sketch I wanted to do that night, had my iPad with me and didn’t want to forget it, so I opened up Brushes and sketched it out.

Later that night we were going to have dinner with Heather’s parents at the Pepper Tree here in Colorado Springs as part of their birthday gift to us (thank you again Jess and Karen). Because they were unexpectedly busy, our reservations weren’t until 8pm. When I got home I was so full of the best food that i have had since our trip to Las Vegas, and so tired, I just really couldn’t see trying to draw.

Besides, even though it was done on my ipad, it was still a sketch that I made that day. It counts. Without further…

One advantage to drawing in Brushes is that you can see a movie of the sketch being created if you follow that link.

This is an example of an unplanned sketch somehow turning out not so bad. To give you an idea of where my mind was when I started: it was 10:30 pm, I was tired and all I had in mind was a mustache. After drawing his head and having it turn out lopsided (because I was pissed at how the mustache looked and wasn’t fully focused on drawing), I decided “Fuck you mister man! You’re going in a wheelchair!”

Okay, I had something almost ENTIRELY different in mind when I started. The guy on the box was close to what I planned, but the big guy behind him… arrrgh. I find that when I draw a person I tend to follow the same body type if I don’t have anything firmly set in mind. And that body type is chunky and aggravating. I’m going to need to make a conscious effort to modify my style into something that I like better. This just sucks.

And I need more practice drawing hands.

    This one was fun.

This was my attempt at the challenge to draw a bicycle from memory for this website. Not horrible, but after finishing this drawing I decided to go back to using a pencil for a while.

Another one that wasn’t very well thought out at the start. The less said about the hand-of-horror the better.

Or maybe it’s not a coincidence. When starting this, my only thought was “teeth. pointy teeth.” That turned into this. Tomorrow’s drawing was/will-have-been drawn on Valentine’s Day, so it’ll probably involve a heart of some kind. I still have a few hours before I need to get it done. Some time to think. We’ll see if that helps.

I decided to switch to pen for a bit, due to the amount of smudging problems I had with #42. I’ve found that when it’s a pen in my hand, my lines are even more hesitant than before and I find myself to have even fewer ideas than usual. Unless it’s a coincidence.

This is my favorite sketch in quite some time.
