Another “from memory” drawing. This one turned out better than the gorilla and the penguin. Probably because I’ve played with more LEGO people than I have gorillas and penguins. That said, his head is too big.

I don’t know. It was originally going to be a die drawn standing on a point from memory, to give you some idea on how far astray I went. Turns out my memory of a die in that position is faulty as my memory of gorillas and penguins. I should have had six edges instead of four. So I had to do something with the box I’d drawn. Apparently this is that something.

Zombies and poetry… fun times ahead.

One of the things I bought for myself with the gift card to Complete Games and Hobbies that my mom and step-dad gave to me was a Zombie magnetic poetry kit. “Over 200 word magnets of the damned.”
For some reason, from the time I first saw it, I’ve been interested in magnetic poetry. I think it’s to do with seeing a bunch of words scatter haphazardly, letting your eyes roam over them and putting together somewhat coherent stories from the jumble. It’s a nice way to stimulate your creativity.
That said, I still haven’t opened my zombie set. I have it next to me at my computer, which is where it ended up after I bought it. Apart from the fridge and the dishwasher, I don’t have a lot of places to play with a set of word magnets.
Quite a few months back I bought a word magnet app for my iPad called “Word Magnets for iPad” strangely enough. I’m glad it was only a dollar, because it was pretty disappointing. When you launch it, all of the words that are available are scattered on an unpleasant “brushed metal” surface, and it can be a real pain to select the word that you want from the mess. There’s no way to add your own lists of words, no way to edit current words, no way to change the background and no update since it launched in April of last year.
Last night I found a free app for the iPad called “Poetry Magnets“. It also only has one background, but at least it’s not a crappy looking brushed metal. Also, the words that you can choose from appear in a kind of drawer at the bottom that you can scroll through by swiping. It has various categories of words to pick from, including zombies! I was quite happy to see that, so I didn’t waste any time downloading it.
You can mix-and-match between the various categories, although it can be a bit hard to locate which categories contain the words like, “and, but, with, a, if” etc. Some are in “Common”, others in “Extensions” and still others in “Function”. Happily, the developer allows you to double tap on a tile and change the word, and I later found out that if you double tap the surface where there are no tiles, you can create a word tile from scratch.
The only thing you can’t do that I would like to do yet is create your own category sets and change the background.
This has been wordy enough. Here are the first two “poems” that I’ve made with the app so far.

Sketch-a-Day #63

See? That’s probably the best penguin I’ve ever drawn. How sad is that? Pretty damned sad, that’s how. Luckily I didn’t spend hours upon hours creating it. Nope, I went from zero to arrrghdammit in about 6 minutes. For anyone keeping track, it’s now an established fact that I can’t draw gorillas or penguins from my mind at this point in time.
What’s next? No idea because I’m caught up with my scanning and posting now. It may be better, it may be worse. I guess we’ll both have to wait and see.
On to other thoughts…
I picked up a pretty awesome book last night called “Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist”. She’s the daughter of Robert Crumb and Aline Kominski-Crumb. In it she’s collected a very small sample of the artwork that she has been creating from when she was 26 months old through the age of 26 years. It’s really interesting to see how her style has developed considering that she has grown in the shadow of the amazing underground cartoonist Robert Crumb. It makes me wish I’d done a better job collecting and cataloging the drawings that Jordyn has made in her lifetime so far. Not that I’m amazing, but I think she could be if she sticks with it.
If you can find it, and you have any interest in that kind of thing, I recommend it. I say “if you can find it” because on Amazon the price ranges from one copy left sold by an outside seller for $26.90 up to $391.52 for a used limited edition copy with a slipcase that has been signed and numbered. Options (at least as far as Amazon are concerned) are limited. There were two copies left at the Barnes & Noble where I bought mine in the Citadel Mall here in Colorado Springs. The cover price is $27.95.
