  1. Sketch-a-Day #62

    March 12, 2011 by Collin

Okay. Yeah. About this… even though I’m getting better at drawing crap from my mind, that doesn’t mean that I’m getting any better at thinking of what to draw. I’ve decided to try to head into odd directions with what I’m drawing for a bit. The odder, the better*

It somewhat started with the worm in the roller-skate, followed up by the bird on the unicycle, but it really coalesced with the toilet drawing:

“When you stare into the toilet the toilet stares back at you.”
    - Friedrich Nietzsche upon addressing the plumber’s union, or so I’ve heard.

Is it going to help? I have no idea. Tomorrow’s sketch certainly didn’t.

    * Couldn’t get more relative if it were fraternal twins making a baby.

I’ll bet you would like an explanation for this drawing. I’ll just bet you would.

I’m finding that I’m getting a bit better at drawing crap from my mind. My cluttered, effed up mind. I’m not saying that’s a fantastic helicopter or anything. Just that it’s better than I thought it would be. It’s no dog-faced gorilla.

I couldn’t think of anything to draw, so I drew a can on the table. It was just that kind of day.

Surprise! So much earlier than normal, huh? The reason for this, and many of the things in my life, is that I am lazy. When I schedule a post (I set them up in advance because I know I can’t keep to a daily posting routine) I’ve been changing the field that has the current time that I’m writing the post to be 18:00 (6pm). Honestly, I’m tired of doing that and there really isn’t much of a point. So from now on, the daily post will happen whenever I actually started to write the post, offset by however many days out I make them. So this next batch should all show up between noon and 1pm MST. After that, who knows. On to the sketch!

In hindsight I should have had Death consulting an hourglass to make it clear the man in the box wasn’t quite dead yet. I was in a morbid mood that night.

This started as me deciding to draw a book from a couple of angles and then it evolved from there. The last thing drawn were the “magic” lines. OooooooOOooo! Spooky.

I’m not sure if my scanner is going to make it through the year. It’s starting to make noises that it didn’t make before. I guess we’ll have to see what happens.

What on earth was I thinking? Apart from worms and roller-skates? Not much it seems.

All in all, for a fast sketch of a house and very little in mind when starting, it didn’t turn out too bad. I did change my mind about how the large ghost was going to look pretty much right after I drew the outline.

This was, absolutely, the closest I’ve come to giving up on this project so far. I couldn’t think of ANYTHING I wanted to draw. My mind was filled with all kinds of stress; job related, money related, life related, etc. Time was pretty much running out. Believe it or not, so far I have stuck to doing the bare minimum of one sketch every day even though I don’t scan and set up posts until the end of the week, and midnight was an hour away.

Ever fiber of my being was screaming “FUCK THIS NOISE!” So, in desperation, I drew a line on the page. That turned into the robot’s foot on the ground. At that point I realized what I was going to draw.

    I like it. A lot.
